NEIGHBORHOD GOODS

NEIGHBORHOOD GOODS

  • Location: Newport Beach, CA (Fashion Island)
Size: 9,000 sf (7,000 sf front of house)

Neighborhood Goods is transforming the evolution of the modern department store. Design, Bitches was brought on to direct the architecture, interior design, environmental branding, and landscape integration for their first two California flagship locations in Newport Beach and in Los Angeles’s Silver Lake neighborhood. Their physical space needed to reflect the company’s unique approach to high-end, digitally-integrated retail, which features an ever-changing roster of brands. At Newport Beach, we designed a flexible, kinetic space that also captures the company’s bold and playful aesthetic—a theater for the performance of retail.

In contrast to the hubbub of Fashion Island, Orange County’s outdoor shopping destination, the transformed 9,000-square-foot space welcomes guests into a modern, light-filled space. Cus-tom marmoleum and corrugated fixtures studded throughout the open space set the stage for curated selections of fashion, beauty, and wellness. These sculptural pieces create wel-coming microcosms for visitors to discover new brands and meander from one zone to anoth-er. A built-in café at the entry invites you to linger. Soft curves carved out of wood and mar-moleum brush up against sheer, woven curtains and bronze, copper & gold-tinged mirrors; scalloped surfaces and warm, brushed metal scatter light and shadow. Durable materials and ephemeral qualities play off each other to create an otherworldly effect—that irreducible magic of sunset hour in Southern California. Once you’ve crossed over the threshold, you’ll feel as if you were transported to a stylish friend’s house, offered a drink and an outfit to try on.
