Modern Animal is a venture-backed tech start-up based in California with a focus on comfortable user experience. In our first space to delve into the human animal relationship, we eliminated the barrier between the front customer areas and the ‘back of house’ using materiality, spacial adjacencies and natural light to blur the line between traditionally separated zones. From the first location in Los Angeles we have helped Modern Animal grow, building trust and improving lives through transparent, design-focused spaces.

Modern Animal is a veterinary clinic designed to be a great place to work. In contrast to typical clinics, we designed a truly transparent home for the company’s flagship, where visitors can see from the street straight through to the treatment areas. The entire experience of visiting an animal clinic, from entry to treatment, has been equally considered.
This project allowed us to delve into the human animal relationship: we eliminated the barrier between the front customer areas and the ‘back of house.’ The design uses materiality, spatial adjacencies, and natural light to blur the line between traditionally separated zones. The curved wall of the wellness room creates a natural flow around the central focal point where everyday care will be seen and celebrated. Skylights throughout provide even daylight and a connection to natural circadian rhythms.
